Salary to Hourly Calculator

A salary hides how many hours it buys. Divide it by the hours you really work — not the ones on the contract — and compare the result with an hourly offer on the same footing.

Dividing by hours

The arithmetic is a division: annual salary divided by the number of hours it pays for. At the default 40 hours a week and 52 weeks a year that is 2,080 hours, so $60,000 becomes about $28.85 an hour.

The interesting part is the denominator. Salaried positions rarely mention the hours they expect, and the same $60,000 is $28.85 at 40 hours, $23.08 at 50 and $19.23 at 60. Before deciding a salary is better than an hourly offer, put both through the same denominator — the calculator above lets you change it.

Paid leave and short years

Salaried pay does not drop when you take a paid holiday, so the hourly equivalent of a salaried job is higher than the same gross divided by the hours you were present — you were paid for the leave too. That is why 2,080 is the right denominator for comparing a salary with an hourly job that offers no paid leave: the hourly worker has to fund those weeks out of the same annual total.

The reverse happens with unpaid leave. Two months off is roughly 347 hours not paid, and a $60,000 salary spread over the remaining 1,733 hours is worth more per hour than the headline rate suggests. If your year has unpaid weeks in it, lower the weeks field rather than the hours field — that is what actually changed.
